Design Case Study

MTI

Meat Technology Ireland, an industry-led initiative established in 2016, focuses on developing a research and innovation platform for beef and sheepmeat processing in Ireland. It is co-funded by Enterprise Ireland and a consortium of nine leading processing companies.

TUS is leading Phase II of the Meat Technology Ireland project, which plays a vital role in preserving the quality of fresh meat by extending its shelf life and maintaining sensory attributes through the use of plastic packaging. However, the negative environmental impact of plastic packaging necessitates the development of sustainable alternatives. In line with upcoming EU regulations that require all plastic packaging to be recyclable or compostable by 2030, the project's objectives include evaluating existing packaging options, optimizing flexible structures to reduce the carbon footprint, improving recyclability, and identifying biodegradable packaging solutions suitable for meat packaging applications.
