Smart manufacturing

Global disruptions in manufacturing and supply chains have highlighted the need for companies to transform their manufacturing systems to be sustainable, automated, flexible and agile. The key enabling technology for this change will be Smart and Advanced manufacturing technologies where data analytics and process automation will be utilised to enhance efficiencies, reduce waste and optimise supply chains. Due to MRI’s expertise and facilities in the polymer science and engineering, and in collaboration with the SFI funded Confirm centre TUS are developing a Polymer 4.0 research theme where it utilises of data analytics and automation to develop Smart Manufacturing testbeds for use by industry.

Legacy and smart enabled polymer processing. These cloud/edge based polymer manufacturing pilot lines will be based on Modular injection moulding manufacturing cells and network enabled polymer extrusion and metrology lines. Sample projects include: digital twin of moulding cell; autonomous robotic picking of moulded parts; non-destructive fault detection in moulded parts, autonomous material handling and sensor embedded 3D printed tooling.
